To conduct an effective crowdfunding PR campaign it is wise to start planning six to twelve months ahead of time. The whole purpose of running a crowdfunding campaign is to raise money from a wide variety of friends, family, business colleagues, accredited investors and complete strangers in the crowd that you have never met, but have a high propensity to support your cause or invest in your business plan.

The real question to answer is, what group of people make up the best universe of potential donors or investors that will help you achieve your funding goals? Defining a target audience is the first step in the crowdfunding process because it will allow you to narrow down an infinite list of media outlets worldwide to a list of targeted blogs, websites, magazines, business journals, newsletters and radio/TV/cable broadcast media that will have a better than average chance of reaching the correct target audience with the right calls-to-action to entice them to provide the necessary financial funding to get your project or business up and running.

Outside of traditional media is the next generation of social media.  By now everyone has heard of social media, but very few people actually know how to leverage its power.  Once again, the real question to answer is what is the best way to build a crowd of people or investors that will not only support your cause, but also care enough about your project or investment opportunity to encourage their personal circle of contacts get involved to make the crowdfunding campaign successful.

Another area that few crowdfunding campaigns to date have focused is how to leverage supply chains and sales distribution channels to raise money.   It is one thing to fund a rewards-based campaign to receive a cool beer coozie or watch, but when done correctly crowdfunding campaigns also can be utilized to solidify worldwide business agreements with retailers, franchises, resellers, distributors, call centers and manufacturer reps to push/pull the product through the sales channels as well as find international manufacturing companies to product the final product.

Once you have identified media outlets, social networking groups and distribution channels that have a high composition of your target audience, you are half-way home.  The next step is to determine what marketing messages and/or calls-to-action need to be used to convince the target audience to make a final purchase decision or in this case a final donation or investment transaction.l

The best way to determine what needs to be said in the marketplace to become successful is to conduct a competitive analysis.  It is important to understand what marketing strategies and messages are being disseminated in sales and marketing channels that will compete both for media attention as well as donor and/or investor dollars.  It is critical to understand both the distribution channels as well as the final purchase decision making process to achieve long-term success once the project moves past the initial crowdfunding process. What features and benefits will be the most attractive and lead to long-term success?
